What is a LARP?

LARP, or live action roleplaying, is a collaborative and interactive theatre experience that allows the participants to immerse themselves fully into a different world or, even, universe. With an array of costuming, props and scenography, the setting becomes the immersive backdrop for a weekend of unique and astounding experiences.

Imagine walking into a book or play as a character of your own direction, being able to influence the plot and the outcome of the story. Each participant will become the main character in their own heroic story. Simply show up with the character concept we’ve developed for you, a costume and an open mind, the rest will unfold before and with you.

How does this all work?

Once the campaign closes, our team will reach out to you and begin the casting process. Soon enough, you will be assigned a unique character concept as either a faction leader or a system representative and you will take agency over that character, changing them to suit your needs. As we get closer to the event, design documents and further universe information will emerge and details will become finalized.

By the time our weekend in September arrives, you will be ready to bring your character to life! Thursday afternoon, everyone will arrive and we will begin workshops to acquaint the participants with the ship, with the game and with each other. Come Thursday evening, you will have begun your journey into the Legends of the Stars universe and game will continue until late Satuday evening.

Culminating on Saturday in a final vote on the conference’s decisions and a formal party to celebrate the successful negotiations, we will continue our off-game after party well into the morning hours. On Sunday, we will debrief and pack up to get off the ship by early afternoon.

Throughout the event, catering will be provided by the local favorite, Al Mac’s Diner, using its kitchen facilities on board. Breakfast and lunch will be served buffet-style on a rotating basis in a private function room aboard the ship, while dinner will be served in the main mess hall, for our exclusive use.

What is the story of Legends of the Stars?

Legends of the Stars is set in a universe torn asunder by war for the past few centuries. But now with a third faction emerging between the two sides of old and a renewed desire for peace and prosperity, envoys from all over the known universe are coming together to forge a lasting deal to end the war for good. But under the surface of these peace negotiations lies a far deeper threat, the prelude to a crisis that would far eclipse the petty squabbling  of the factions.

In the far reaches of deep space, a neutral station serves as host to representatives from the universe’s most important systems and leaders of the three major factions. Some come to influence the crucial decisions being made, others to serve their personal agenda, both political and social, an some come only to enjoy what is likely to be one of the greatest parties in the universe.

During the day, representatives will spend their time participating in various committees, workshops and demonstrations. Important decisions will be made and each of the factions will seek to impress their prowess on the collected representatives. But as night falls and the true darkness of space sets in, the representatives are free to explore, socialize and fulfill whatever agendas and goals they may have. Many deals need to be made, many alliances must be forged and the station contains the keys to a vast array of secrets and mysteries to be discovered and unraveled.

Tickets

There are many different ways to experience Legends of the Stars and a small part of that had to do with the type of ticket you purchase. We currently have the following types of tickets available:

  • Standard ticket, you will be staying in a bunk in the large shared bunkroom. $300 each.
  • Officer’s ticket, you will be staying with three friends in a private officer’s suite. $2000 for four participants.
  • Secret Order ticket, you will be staying with seven friends in a private officer’s suite. Included in this ticket will be a unique sub-plot for you and your friends. $6000 for eight participants.
  • Captain’s ticket, you will be staying in the private captain’s room with an en-suite shower. Included in this ticket is the opportunity to play the space station’s captain and host of the negotiations. $1500 for one participant.

In the interest of full disclosure, we feel the need to state that the battleship is not a hotel. While the suites and the captain’s room offer the opportunity for more conventional sleeping arrangements, the bunk rooms are not the most comfortable or private of sleeping arrangements.

Bunk rooms are big open shared spaces, where many participants will be sleeping. Bunks are four-high, though only three of them will ever be used. They are no different in quality than your average cot, but are certainly not mattress-quality. Personal storage will be limited and we will have staff members watching bunk rooms 24 hours a day. Showers and bathrooms are shared, though stalls are private.

In order to provide such an amazing and immersive space for you at this event, this was a necessary trade-off. But we think and hope that the 66% of your experience in the waking hours on the battleship will far outweigh the 33% of your experience spent sleeping.

Our Setting

We have the great pleasure of hosting our event at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. Not only is this the largest collection of historic naval vessels in the world, but we have almost unlimited access to their gorgeous collection of ships!

At only about an hour’s drive from Boston, the transportation hub for New England, and less than half an hour from Providence, this site is entirely accessible to participants from across the country and across the globe.

Among the various vessels at the Cove – including a submarine, cruiser and destroyer – is the USS Massachusetts battleship. A small city on the ocean, this battleship provides the immense and diverse landscape that is perfect to represent our world. Inside you will be able to explore and interact with engine rooms, mess halls, combat information centers, artillery batteries, and a veritable maze that is six stories tall!

On Accessibility

While we are committed to bringing together an event that is accessible to as many interested people as possible, we must face the realities of our setting. Battleship Cove has made admirable efforts to make their facilities accessible to visitors with physical disabilities and limited mobility, but there is a limit to how much can be made accessible on the historic vessels we use for our setting.

There are no functioning elevators anywhere on this site and almost all doorways have high lips that make wheelchair use all but impossible. Staircases are steep and require participants to grip railings. Travelling between levels and through certain passageways require caution and can be challenging even for those with full mobility. Even the bunkrooms require full mobility to climb to one’s bunk, though there are a limited number of bottom bunks available.

While we do not want to discourage anyone from participating in this event, we want to have an honest discussion with potential participants who may find the physical setting of the larp a barrier to their experience. If you feel this may be the case for you, please contact us before committing to a ticket. We will do the very best we can to accommodate your needs.

Our Team

Experienced larpers who have made imagination and play into their professions, LARP Adventure Program will be supporting this project with the full strength of its staff. As we get closer to the event, we will draw in outside help from friends and contacts who will help create this amazing event for you all.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Thanks to the many interested folks, we’ve started collecting answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What kind of system is used?

We are running as a Nordic larp model, a larger scale and fully immersive theatre larp common in Europe and increasingly popular here in the States.

As such, there are no skills and attributes, no hit points and damage. Rather, each participant receives a uniquely written character sheet that expounds upon the background and personality of that character and their home system.

From there, participants take over their characters and mold them to their own role playing desires. Once we get to the game, it’s about role playing and story. Even the combat is done in a theatre style without a built-in resolution mechanic outside of player improv (we workshop this and it definitely works).

What type of experience is this? What’s the focus of roleplay? What sort of character archetypes are expected?

Each person’s experience is dependent on the style they pursue, so I’ve merged these two questions.

In the larp, we create an open world environment for you to interact with – the setting of an intergalactic conference rife with factionalism and conflict. All characters will have their own goals and ideals – some suggested by the organizers, many decided on by the players themselves.

The opportunities are boundless, but we’re expecting to see a lot of:

  • Politicians looking to reap reward for their system or themselves
  • Soldiers seeking to better understand the Source and the mysteries behind it
  • Faction members recruiting independent systems to their side or even converting opposing systems
  • Merchants scoring trade routes and arms deals, or even just a quick buck on a bounty
  • Curious minds wanting to know what really motivated this gathering and what secrets the faction leaders are hiding
  • Socialites out for a good time and a great party

Do you have an overview of the game’s timeline?

Thursday will focus on settling in, workshops, and orienting everyone with the maze that is battleship cove. Sometime in the evening, play will begin with the ‘full’ disclosure by faction leaders of the purpose of this conference. The various factions will host social events throughout the ship and a number of guides will be offering tours of the facilities on board. And, of course, the entire complex will be open for exploration and there will certainly be things waiting down the dark hallways in the belly of the ships.

Friday jumps into committees, workshops and demonstrations. While every character will have a schedule of sorts according to their relevant interests, it’s an opt-in system so participants are welcome to drop-in and out of activities to suit their interests. Preliminary detailed information about the important decisions to be made will be laid out, other decisions will be considered, skills will be explored (including the Source and saber combat) and much more.

When the ‘work day’ comes to an end, the most important night of campaigning begins. Some will care about the decisions to be made, others won’t give the slightest thought to it. But the social events, meetings of the various minor factions and secret orders, as well as the presence of the familiar and comfortable cantina will serve as an excellent backdrop for whatever goals and desires are being pursued.

Finally Saturday will return us to the set of committees, workshops and demonstrations as last-minute lobbying, bribes and threats are hashed out. When they come to an end, the formal voting occurs and the results are tabulated. In the meantime, the participants prepare for the celebratory formal. However it turns out, a decision has been made and the fate of the universe has been sealed. That deserves one hell of a party!

As the night closes, the announcement of the decisions will be made and an inkling of the results will be revealed. And then we transition to an after party into the wee hours of the morning.

Sunday will involve a structured debrief and exodus!

Risks and challenges

While we are confident in our ability to deliver this event with the proper level of support, there are a fair few risks and challenges. We are working with a host organization that has never interacted with LARP groups before on a setting that, until recently, seemed to exist outside the realm of possibility for this sort of event! While we have a contract in our hand and the date reserved, there is always the possibility of circumstances changing with our partner.

Our battleships are beautiful, historic landmarks and we understand that our partners at Battleship Cove have to make their safety and preservation the top concern. That poses all sorts of challenges for an active and immersive larp event. However, with our experience having worked with many sites across New England, including for many years with the USS Salem, we feel that we are the most qualified team to bring this project to life.

Besides the circumstances of Battleship Cove, our only major potential risk is timing. September is not all that far away and there will be a great deal of work between the end of our campaign and the start of the event to get us ready to board! However, we have the luxury of a full-time staff of experience larpers, writers and administrators who are ready to devote their time, energy and resources to this effort.

Factions:

Tuath – “We are the Tuath, the true heirs to the legacy of the Daoine, newest of the orders and those who truly represent the people of this universe. We believe in the power that peace and prosperity can offer us all, if only we can be strong enough to achieve it. We will be the guardians of the stars as we forge a new way, one driven by the Daoine.”

Sidhe – “We are the Sidhe, the hidden servants of the Daoine, last of the orders and those who save the universe from its own mortal trappings. We believe in the necessity of death in the natural cycle to make room for new life. We will be the shepherds of the stars as we guide all to that which waits for every one of us at the end – a new beginning.”

Maithe – “We are the Maithe, the noble knights of the Daoine, first of the orders and those who defend the universe from the savages who seek to do it harm. We believe in the unending value of beauty and growth, life and pleasure. We will be the architects of the stars as we give and protect the gift of life wherever it may flourish.”
